This series of photos were taken in 2010 throughout the Middle East just before the Arab Spring – uprisings in Libya, Egypt and Syria. These photos are simple and unassuming – they explore the slow and calm qualities of everyday life for people in the region, a stark contrast to the chaos and trauma of war photography currently emerging from the region.

This series reminds me that the people I see on the news are real people, they take their kids to school, they get haircuts, they run a restaurant, and they have brothers and sisters and sons and daughters.

I felt welcomed in most places I traveled, encountering the warmth and curiosity of people quite different to myself but never less deserving of peace and stability.
