I spent one year living and traveling through Mexico, it was the event that inspired me to pick up a camera and start documenting what I was seeing, and which profoundly affected many other aspects of my life and though process.

It instilled in me a love for the absurd and surreal in everyday life. I spent a great deal of my time watching experimental films and reading magic realism stories which were pivotal in the development of my understanding of visual communication and symbolism.

I am one-third of multidisciplinary collective Beate Adfectus.

About:

We had reached a peak in our photocopying skills.

Beate Adfectus is the brainchild of three worn-down and disillusioned 20-somethings; tired of shitty hospitality jobs, unpaid internships and ‘learning the ropes’. These three renegades set out to break down walls between design, film, fashion, photography, architecture and new media to create new hybrid works that excite the senses and the imagination.

We’re not ashamed to admit our ambition is to be the most sublime fools ever sent rambling. We have an absolute addiction to craziness and folly and hysteria. Through the delirium come stories, of how we see the world.

+ this is not limited to how we see the world through architecture. Architecture is a tool through which we understand ourselves, as well as the world around us. Forces that make up our built environment are no longer restricted to bricks and mortar. Augmented space, images, data scapes and our new intangible identities are constantly reformatting the way we interact with the world beyond our own skin.

Undoubtedly, there are irresistible opportunities to be taken from a cross disciplinary collaboration. All that we hope is that these mongrel ideas that we birth into the world take hold, interact and possibly, just maybe, inspire.

Beate Adfectus are:
+Jade Cantwell+
+Angela Woda+
+Kara Bombell+

“Tin City – Morning and Eve” was shot in the remote squatter community known as Tin City – tucked away behind the rolling sand dunes of Stockton Beach on the New South Wales central coast. The small encampment of 11 shacks is a constant source of controversy – the shacks and inhabitants have been there for over 30 years, yet their presence is not welcomed by the groups that manage the area – National Parks and Wildlife Services and the local Aboriginal Land Council.

Tin City’s future is in question as the squatters lease ends and groups petition for their removal, but no one cannot deny the lasting impression one is left with after visiting this arresting and strange little community.

“Tin City – Morning and Eve” explores this engaging area in the quiet hours of the morning and early hours of the evening when the light casts enchanting and luminous colours.
